This piece is caught in a freeze-frame, both physically and
by its reflection in the mirror. The piece is equipped for
motion with many wheels, but is momentarily tethered by cast
iron "plus sign" weights. The same strings that
tether the wheeled hoops form woven intersections embroidered
with the signs for plus, minus, equal, and zero--signs that
echo the formal shapes in the sculpture. In both the representation
of these mathematical signs, and the physical tension of the
piece between motion and stasis, an underlying theme emerges.
Equilibrium is both fleeting, and dynamic--the result of a
constant interplay of external and internal forces.
